- Description: Before it shut down most of its operations in 2002, Consolidated Freightways (CF), was one of the largest long-distance, less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers in the US, behind Yellow Transportation and Roadway Express. CF's fleet included more than 38,000 tractors, trailers, and other vehicles, and it had about 350 terminals in North America. But the company was unable to secure financing that it needed, and it has laid off nearly all of its employees and filed for bankruptcy protection. CF's Canadian and Mexican trucking businesses, Canadian Freightways and Grupo Consolidated Freightways, and its air and ocean freight forwarding unit, CF AirFreight, are still in business.
