Kindred Healthcare (formerly Vencor) is one of the US' largest long-term health care providers, with about 55 long-term acute care hospitals and more than 300 skilled nursing facilities. Services include long-term intensive care, respiratory services, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation therapy, and Alzheimer's disease care. Kindred also operates institutional pharmacies. In 1998, the company split itself into Kindred and Ventas (a REIT, or real estate investment trust, that owns the properties and leases them to Kindred). The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and has emerged under a plan of reorganization worked out with Ventas.
